Our chiropractors see migraine headache sufferers on a regular basis and chiropractic helps many with migraine prevention. Migraines are a debilitating condition characterized by moderate to severe headaches and nausea and women are three times more likely to suffer then men. About one third of sufferers report an “aura” shortly before the headache starts. The aura is an otherwise unexplained sensory experience most commonly affecting smell, vision or hearing which the sufferer usually experiences before the headaches start. So, for example, the sufferer may know they are developing a migraine if they see flashing lines in their left field of vision.
Typically a migraine headache affects one half of the head, is throbbing and lasts 4 to 72 hours. The throbbing is caused by stretching or increased sensitivity of blood vessels in the skull. If you have already been diagnosed with migraines, you will know that symptoms can also include vomiting and increased sensitivity to light or sound and may be aggravated by sudden head movements.
